MODE OF ACTION:
Metronidazole is active against anaerobic microorganism, both bacteria and protozoa.
The 5-Nitro group undergoes a reductive transformation into active metabolites that has an inhibitory effect on the micro organism’s DNA synthesis, they also cause a loss of the helical structure of the DNA leading to the DNA strand structure breakages. Other reduction-oxidation processes are inhibited leading to the micro organism’s death.
Diloxanide furoate is a prodrug and is hydrolyzed in the gastrointestinal tract to produce diloxanide, the active ingredient. Diloxanide is a luminal amebicide, however, the mechanism of action of diloxanide is unknown. Diloxanide destroys the trophozoites of E. histolytica that eventually form into cysts.
